What is Aqueous Humor?

Human aqueous humor is a clear, biologically active intraocular fluid that plays a vital role in maintaining intraocular pressure, nutrient transport, and metabolic balance within the anterior chamber of the eye.

From a research perspective, aqueous humor is a highly informative biospecimen because it reflects real-time biochemical and inflammatory changes occurring in ocular tissues.
In pharmaceutical research, aqueous humor is increasingly used to identify early disease biomarkers, monitor therapeutic response, and evaluate ocular drug penetration.
Because it contains cytokines, growth factors, metabolites, and signaling proteins, it provides a direct molecular snapshot of ocular disease activity that cannot be replicated by animal models alone. Aqueous Humor-Primary Conditions

  • Macular Degeneration (AMD): Affects central vision as the macula (part of the retina) deteriorates
  • Diabetic Retinopathy: Damage to blood vessels in the retina from diabetes, a leading cause of blindness.
  • Open-Angle Glaucoma: The most common form; drainage channels (trabecular meshwork) become slowly “clogged” over time, leading to gradual pressure increase and peripheral vision loss.
  • Angle-Closure Glaucoma: A medical emergency where the iris physically blocks the drainage angle. This causes a sudden, painful spike in pressure.
  • Ocular Hypertension: High eye pressure without visible nerve damage. It is a major risk factor for developing glaucoma.
  • Secondary Glaucoma: Caused by other issues like eye injuries, inflammation (uveitis), or certain medications like steroids.
  • Pigmentary Glaucoma: Pigment granules flake off the iris and clog the drainage system
  • Dry Eyes Syndrome: Dry eye disease is a common condition that occurs when your tears can’t provide adequate lubrication for your eyes. Tears can be inadequate and unstable for many reasons.
