Liver Cancer Samples for Research
Bay Biosciences high quality clinical grade fresh frozen (-80°) serum, plasma, peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) samples from unique liver cancer patients.
Function of the Liver
The liver is, in fact, the largest internal organ in the body. Moreover, it plays a key role in the digestion of food. Additionally, the liver is a critical organ that the body cannot live without. Specifically, it helps filter impurities and produces bile, which, in turn, helps the body digest food and process fats. Following are some of the important functions of the liver:
- First, it collects and filters blood from the intestines.
- Second, it processes and stores needed nutrients absorbed by the intestines.
- Furthermore, it converts some nutrients into energy or into substances needed to repair and build tissue.
- In addition, it produces some of the body’s blood-clotting factors.
- Moreover, it removes toxins from the body
- Finally, it helps maintain the proper sugar level in the body.
Liver Cancer
Liver cancer begins when healthy cells change and grow out of control in the liver, forming a mass called a tumor. Specifically, a tumor can be cancerous or benign. In contrast, a cancerous tumor is malignant, meaning it can grow and spread to other parts of the body. On the other hand, a benign tumor means the tumor can grow but will not spread.
Furthermore, liver cancer, also known as Primary Hepatic Cancer, is a cancer that starts in the liver. Notably, the leading cause of liver cancer is cirrhosis due to hepatitis B, hepatitis C, or excess drinking of alcohol.
Additionally, other causes include diseases like Non Fatty Alcoholic Liver (NAFLD) and other diseases. In fact, the most common type of Liver Cancer is Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC), which makes up 80% of cases.
Moreover, liver cancer can be classified in two ways. First, primary liver cancer starts in the tissue of the liver. Specifically, the most common type of primary liver cancer is called hepatocellular carcinoma. Consequently, the number of cases of primary liver cancer in the United States has been increasing over the years. In fact, the number of diagnoses has more than tripled since the 1980s.
Worldwide liver cancer diagnoses have increased by 75 percent in the past several years. Specifically, secondary liver cancer is a cancer that started in some other part of the body and infiltrated into the liver. In fact, this type is also called metastatic liver cancer.
Therefore, this is not liver cancer, but rather metastatic cancer of another organ. For example, pancreatic, colon, stomach, breast, lung, or other cancer that has spread to the liver is still named according to the organ in which it started.
Signs and Symptoms of Liver Cancer
Usually there are no signs or symptoms of liver cancer if the tumor is detected early as part of the screening process. If the liver is swollen following are some of the noticeable signs and symptoms of liver:
- Abdominal swelling (ascites)
- Bloating
- Dark colored urine
- Fever
- Headaches
- Jaundice, which appears as yellowing of the skin and eyes and occurs when the liver is not functioning properly
- A hard lump under the ribs on the right side of the body, which could be the tumor or a sign that the liver has gotten enlarged (hepatomegaly)
- Nausea and vomiting
- Pain, especially at the top right of the abdominal area, near the right shoulder blade, or in the back
- Diarrhea
- Fatigue
- Unexplained weight loss
- Weakness
Some symptoms experienced by people with liver cancer (HCC) may be caused by liver cirrhosis rather than the tumor. These symptoms include abdominal swelling from fluid accumulation, called ascites, and needing more water tablets, called diuretics, to control the fluid accumulation.
Hepatic encephalopathy (mental confusion) and bleeding from the esophagus or stomach, or any worsening of the condition, may also indicate cancer.
Causes of Liver Cancer
Harmful substances, like alcohol, drugs and fatty foods, damage the liver and cause liver cells to die. Although the liver can regenerate itself, if the damage continues for several years or decades, the organ may become permanently scarred, causing a condition called cirrhosis. Cirrhosis, diabetes and chronic infection with hepatitis B or C virus are all risk factors for liver cancer. Many of these conditions develop from behaviors that are often lifestyle-related, such as:
- Heavy alcohol use
- Drug use
- Smoking
- Obesity
- Unprotected sex
Diagnosis of Liver Cancer
Diagnosis of liver cancer may include the following:
- Imaging tests such as MRI, CT scan, ultrasound, PET
- Liver biopsy
- Lab tests
- A Bone scan
Treatment of Liver Cancer
Many treatment options are used for liver cancer, including surgery, radiation therapy and immunotherapy. Treatment options for liver cancer include:
- Chemotherapy
- Radiation therapy
- Targeted therapies
- Interventional radiology
- Gastroenterology
- Immunotherapy
Biospecimens
Bay Biosciences is a global leader in providing researchers with high quality, clinical grade, fully characterized human tissue samples, bio-specimens, and human bio-fluid collections.
Human biospecimens are available including cancer (tumor) tissue, cancer serum, cancer plasma, cancer peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). and human tissue samples from most other therapeutic areas and diseases.
Bay Biosciences maintains and manages its own biorepository, the human tissue bank (biobank) consisting of thousands of diseased samples (specimens) and from normal healthy donors for controls, available in all formats and types.
In fact, our biobank procures and stores fully consented, de-identified and institutional review boards (IRB) approved human tissue samples, human biofluids such as serum samples, plasma samples from various diseases and matched controls.
Also, all our human tissue collections, human biospecimens and human biofluids are provided with detailed, samples associated patient’s clinical data.
In fact, this critical patient’s clinical data includes information relating to their past and current disease, treatment history, lifestyle choices, biomarkers, and genetic information.
Additionally, researchers find the patient’s data associated with the human biospecimens extremely valuable and use it to help identify new effective treatments (drug discovery & development) in oncology, as well as in other therapeutic areas and diseases.
Bay Biosciences banks wide variety of human tissue samples and human biological samples, including fresh frozen human biospecimens cryogenically preserved at – 80°C.
For example fresh frozen tissue samples, tumor tissue samples, formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE), tissue slides, with matching human bio-fluids, whole blood and blood-derived products such as human serum, human plasma and human PBMCs.
Bay Biosciences is a global leader in collecting and providing human tissue samples according to the specified requirements and customized, tailor-made collection protocols.
Please contact us anytime to discuss your special research projects and customized human tissue sample requirements.
Types of Biospecimens
Bay Biosciences provides human tissue samples (human specimens) and human biofluids from diseased and normal healthy donors which includes:
- Peripheral whole-blood
- Amniotic fluid
- Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BAL)
- Sputum
- Pleural effusion
- Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
- Serum (sera)
- Plasma
