Bay Biosciences provides high quality, clinical grade, matched cryogenically preserved sera (serum), plasma, peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) biofluid samples from patients diagnosed with Seizures.
The sera (serum), plasma and PBMC biofluid specimens are processed from seizures patient’s peripheral whole-blood using customized collection and processing protocols.
The seizures patients matched biofluid samples are collected from unique patients diagnosed with seizures and are provided to a valued pharmaceutical customer for research, diagnostics, discovery and drug development.
Detailed clinical data, seizures patient’s history, symptoms, complete blood count (CBC), serology, MRI, biopsy tissue, histopathology information, elevated biomarker levels, genetic and metabolic information associated with leukemia specimens is provided to a valued customer for research, development and drug discovery.
The seizures sera (serum), plasma and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) biofluids are processed from patients peripheral whole-blood using customized collection and processing protocols.
Seizures Overview
A seizure is a sudden, uncontrolled electrical disturbance in the brain. It can cause changes in the behavior, movements or feelings, and in levels of consciousness. Having two or more seizures within 24 hours apart that aren’t brought on by an identifiable cause is generally considered to be epilepsy.
There are many types of seizures, which range in symptoms and severity. Seizure types vary by where in the brain they begin and how far they spread. Most seizures last from 30 seconds to two minutes. A seizure that lasts longer than five minutes is considered a medical emergency.
Seizures are common and can happen after a stroke, a closed head injury, an infection such as meningitis or another illness. Most of the times, the cause of a seizure is unknown.
Most seizure disorders can be controlled with medication, but management of seizures can still have a significant impact on the daily life. However seizures can be controlled with medications.
Types of Seizures
There are two main types of seizures according to the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) classification, generalized onset seizures and focal onset seizures.
Generalized Seizures
Generalized seizures involve the entire brain from the start. Following are the common subtypes of seizures:
- Tonic-clonic (grand mal): Tonic-clonic (grand mal) is the most common subtype of generalized seizures. In patients with tonic-clonic type seizures the arms and legs get stiff, and patients may stop breathing for a bit. The limbs will jerk around and head will move about, as well.
- Absence seizures (petit mal): Absence seizures patients lose awareness briefly, typically, they last only a few seconds. Children get absence seizures more often than adults.
- Febrile seizures: These are convulsions a child may have from a high fever caused by an infection. They can last a few minutes but are usually harmless.
- Infantile spasms: The child’s body gets stiff suddenly and their head goes forward. These spasms usually stop by age 4. Many kids who have these get epilepsy later in life.
Partial (focal) seizures
There are two types of Partial (focal) seizures:
- Focal onset aware seizure: Patients with focal aware onset seizure remain conscious during the seizure, which is very brief (usually less than 2 minutes). Patient may or may not be able to respond to people while it’s happening.
- Focal onset impaired awareness seizures: Focal onset impaired awareness seizure can cause unconsciousness. Patients may also do things without knowing it, like lip smacking, chewing, moving the legs, or thrusting the pelvis.
Signs and Symptoms of Seizures
Seizures can have different symptoms depending on the type of seizure, Following are common signs and symptoms of seizures:
- Uncontrollable, spastic movements of your body, particularly your arms or legs
- Stiffening and then loosening of limbs or muscles
- Loss of consciousness
- Staring into space
- Confusion
- Sudden emotional states that can include a feeling of doom, deja vu, fear, or euphoria
- Sweating and Nausea
- Involuntary movements of the tongue or mouth, screaming, or crying
- Rapid blinking of the eyes
- Falling to the ground
Causes of Seizures
Seizures can happen with no explanation, but there are also conditions and events that can bring them on, including:
- Stroke
- Cancer
- Brain tumors
- Head Injuries
- Electrolyte imbalance
- Low Blood Sugar
- Repetitive sounds or flashing lights
- Certain medications , like antipsychotics and some asthma drugs
- Withdrawal from some medications, like Xanax, narcotics, or alcohol
- Use of narcotics, such as cocaine and heroin
- Brain infections, like meningitis
- A high fever
- COVID-19
Bay Biosciences is a global leader in providing researchers with high quality, clinical grade, fully characterized human tissue samples, bio-specimens and human bio-fluid collections from cancer (tumor) tissue, cancer serum, cancer plasma cancer PBMC and human tissue samples from most other therapeutic areas and diseases.
Bay Biosciences maintains and manages it’s own bio-repository, human tissue bank (biobank) consisting of thousands of diseased samples (specimens) and from normal healthy donors available in all formats and types. Our biobank procures and stores fully consented, deidentified and institutional review boards (IRB) approved human tissue samples and matched controls.
All our human human tissue collections, human specimens and human bio-fluids are provided with detailed samples associated patient’s clinical data. This critical patient’s clinical data includes information relating to their past and current disease, treatment history, lifestyle choices, biomarkers and genetic information.
Patient’s data is extremely valuable for researchers and is used to help identify new effective treatments (drug discovery & development) in oncology, other therapeutic areas and diseases. This clinical information is critical to demonstrate their impact, monitor the safety of medicines, testing & diagnostics, and generate new knowledge about the causes of disease and illness.
Bay Biosciences banks wide variety of human tissue samples and biological samples including cryogenically preserved -80°C, fresh, fresh frozen tissue samples, tumor tissue samples, FFPE’s, tissue slides, with matching human bio-fluids, whole blood and blood derived products such as serum, plasma and PBMC’s.
Bay Biosciences is a global leader in collecting and providing human tissue samples according to the researchers specified requirements and customized, tailor made collection protocols. Please contact us anytime to discuss your special research projects and customized human tissue sample requirements.
Bay Biosciences provides human tissue samples (human specimens) from diseased and normal healthy donors; including peripheral whole-blood, amniotic fluid, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BAL), sputum, pleural effusion, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), serum (sera), plasma, peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC’s), saliva, Buffy coat, urine, stool samples, aqueous humor, vitreous humor, kidney stones, renal calculi, nephrolithiasis, urolithiasis and other bodily fluids from most diseases including cancer.
We can also procure most human bio-specimens and can do special collections and requests of human samples that are difficult to find. All our human tissue samples are procured through IRB approved clinical protocols and procedures.
In addition to the standard processing protocols Bay Biosciences can also provide human plasma, serum, PBMC bio-fluid samples using custom processing protocols, you can buy donor specific sample collections in higher volumes and specified sample aliquoting from us.
