High Cholesterol Overview

Cholesterol is a waxy substance, a type of a lipid found in the blood. Cholesterol is produced by the liver naturally and plays a vital role for the formation of cell membranes, certain hormones and vitamin D. The body needs cholesterol to build healthy cells, but high levels of cholesterol can increase your risk of heart disease.

High cholesterol is  mainly caused by eating fatty foods, being overweight, not exercising enough, smoking and drinking alcohol. High cholesterol can be inherited, and can run in families but it’s often the result of unhealthy lifestyle choices, which make it preventable and treatable.

A healthy diet, regular exercise and sometimes medication can help reduce high cholesterol.

With high cholesterol, fatty deposits can develop in the blood vessels. These deposits grow eventually, making it difficult for enough blood to flow through the arteries. Sometimes, those deposits can break suddenly and form a clot that can cause a heart attack or stroke.

Types of Cholesterol

To help transport cholesterol, your liver produces lipoproteins. This combination of proteins and cholesterol is called a lipoprotein, which are particles made from fat and protein. They carry cholesterol and triglycerides (another type of lipid) through the bloodstream.

There are  two major forms of lipoproteins:

  • Low-density lipoprotein (LDL): If the blood contains too much LDL cholesterol (cholesterol carried by low-density lipoprotein), it’s known as high cholesterol.

LDL can build up on the walls of the arteries and make them narrower. The fatty deposits form plaque that lines the arteries and can cause blockages. This build-up is called atherosclerosis.
    .

  • High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is the other main lipoprotein. HDL is often known as the good cholesterol.

Signs and Symptoms of High Cholesterol

Usually high cholesterol does not cause any signs or symptoms. Most people don’t realize they have high cholesterol until they develop serious complications, such as a heart attack or stroke.

Causes of High Cholesterol

Eating too many foods that are high in cholesterol, saturated fats, and trans fats can increase the risk of developing high cholesterol. Other lifestyle factors can also contribute to high cholesterol. These factors include inactivity, lack of exercise, smoking and alcohol abuse.

Genetics can also affect developing high cholesterol. Genes are passed down from parents to children. Certain genes instruct the body on how to process cholesterol and fats. If your family and parents have high cholesterol, there are chances that you  will also developing high cholesterol also.

Bay Biosciences is a global leader in providing researchers with high quality, clinical grade, fully characterized human tissue samples, bio-specimens and human bio-fluid collections.

We have samples available are cancer (tumor) tissue, cancer serumcancer plasma cancer PBMC and human tissue samples from most other therapeutic areas and diseases.

Our company Bay Biosciences maintains and manages its own bio-repository, human tissue bank (biobank) consisting of thousands of diseased samples (specimens) and from normal healthy donors available in all formats and types.

Our biobank procures and stores fully consented, deidentified and institutional review boards (IRB) approved human tissue samples and matched controls.

All our human tissue collections, human specimens and human bio-fluids are provided with detailed samples associated patient’s clinical data.

This critical patient’s clinical data includes information relating to their past and current disease, treatment history, lifestyle choices, biomarkers and genetic information.

Patient’s data is extremely valuable for researchers and is used to help identify new effective treatments (drug discovery & development) in oncology, other therapeutic areas and diseases.

This clinical information is critical to demonstrate their impact, monitor the safety of medicines, testing & diagnostics, and generate new knowledge about the causes of disease and illness.

Bay Biosciences banks wide variety of human tissue samples and biological samples including cryogenically preserved at – 80°C.

Including fresh frozen tissue samplestumor tissue samples, FFPE’s, tissue slides, with matching human bio-fluids, whole blood and blood derived products such as serumplasma and PBMC’s.

Bay Biosciences is a global leader in collecting and providing human tissue samples according to the researchers specified requirements and customized, tailor-made collection protocols.

Please contact us anytime to discuss your special research projects and customized human tissue sample requirements.

Bay Biosciences provides human tissue samples (human specimens) from diseased and normal healthy donors which includes:

We can also procure most human bio-specimens and can-do special collections and requests of human samples that are difficult to find. All our human tissue samples are procured through IRB approved clinical protocols and procedures.

In addition to the standard processing protocols Bay Biosciences can also provide human plasmaserum, PBMC bio-fluid samples using custom processing protocols, you can buy donor specific sample collections in higher volumes and specified sample aliquots from us.

Bay Biosciences also provides human samples from normal healthy donors, volunteers, for controls and clinical research, contact us Now.
