Joint Swelling Overview

Swelling in the joints refers to the enlargement of the joints. Swelling in the joints occurs when there’s an increase of fluid in the tissues that surround the joints. Joint swelling is common with different types of arthritis, injuries and infections.

Signs and Symptoms of Joint Swelling

Following are the common signs and symptoms of swollen joints:

  • Aching pain
  • Feeling warm to touch
  • Stiffness
  • Inability to move joints normally
  • Loss of range of motion of the joint.
  • Redness

Causes of Joint Swelling

Arthritis is one of the most common causes of developing joint swelling. Following are some of the most common conditions that causes joint swelling:

  • Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS): Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is a rare type of arthritis that causes pain and stiffness in the spine, is an inflammatory autoimmune disease that, over time, can cause some of the small bones in your spine (vertebrae) to fuse.
  • Gout: Gout related arthritis usually strikes suddenly, with severe joint pain, swelling, warmth, and redness, often in the big toe. Gout causes a painful, swollen joint that’s so severe that even a light weight or pressure on the joints can cause distress. In gout disease  uric acid, which is a normal chemical in the body, forms crystals that deposit in the joints, causing inflammation and pain pain. The crystals may also deposit in other areas to become nodules under the skin or develop kidney stones.
  • Infectious Arthritis (IA): Infectious arthritis or septic arthritis is the result of a bacterial, viral, or fungal infection in the tissues and fluid of a joint. Joint infection usually occurs after a previous infection in the body. The infection travels to the joint via the bloodstream from another part of the body, such as a person’s skin, nose, throat, ears, or an existing wound. Paininflammation swollen joints, and fever develop very quickly. The joints most commonly affected with infectious arthritis are the knees, hips, ankles, wrists and shoulders.

  • Joint injuries. Joint injuries can result in painful, swollen joints, and stiffness. Sometimes, joint pain can be caused by injured or torn muscles, tendons, and ligaments surrounding the joint.

  • Osteoarthritis (OA): Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis, affecting millions of people worldwide. Osteoarthritis (OA) is the “wear-and-tear” arthritis disease that occurs with aging or after injury. In Osteoarthritis , there’s a wearing down of the cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones wears down creating painful joints. Usually Osteoarthritis cause joint swelling in those joints that bear weight over a lifetime, such as spine, hips, knees and feet.

  • Psoriatic Arthritis: Psoriatic arthritis is an inflammatory joint disease that’s linked with psoriasis, a skin condition. Around thirty percent patients with psoriasis will develop psoriasis arthritis.

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA): Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an inflammatory disease that can happen at any age, including in young children. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) causes stiff, painful swollen joints, it usually affects patients knees, hands and feet.  RA can also affect most joints and other parts of the body, creating difficulty in a persons daily activities.

Bay Biosciences is a global leader in providing researchers with high quality, clinical grade, fully characterized human tissue samples, bio-specimens and human bio-fluid collections.

We have samples available are cancer (tumor) tissue, cancer serumcancer plasma cancer PBMC and human tissue samples from most other therapeutic areas and diseases.

Our company Bay Biosciences maintains and manages its own bio-repository, human tissue bank (biobank) consisting of thousands of diseased samples (specimens) and from normal healthy donors available in all formats and types.

Our biobank procures and stores fully consented, deidentified and institutional review boards (IRB) approved human tissue samples and matched controls.

All our human tissue collections, human specimens and human bio-fluids are provided with detailed samples associated patient’s clinical data.

This critical patient’s clinical data includes information relating to their past and current disease, treatment history, lifestyle choices, biomarkers and genetic information.

Patient’s data is extremely valuable for researchers and is used to help identify new effective treatments (drug discovery & development) in oncology, other therapeutic areas and diseases.

This clinical information is critical to demonstrate their impact, monitor the safety of medicines, testing & diagnostics, and generate new knowledge about the causes of disease and illness.

Bay Biosciences banks wide variety of human tissue samples and biological samples including cryogenically preserved at – 80°C.

Including fresh frozen tissue samplestumor tissue samples, FFPE’s, tissue slides, with matching human bio-fluids, whole blood and blood derived products such as serumplasma and PBMC’s.

Bay Biosciences is a global leader in collecting and providing human tissue samples according to the researchers specified requirements and customized, tailor-made collection protocols.

Please contact us anytime to discuss your special research projects and customized human tissue sample requirements.

Bay Biosciences provides human tissue samples (human specimens) from diseased and normal healthy donors which includes:

We can also procure most human bio-specimens and can-do special collections and requests of human samples that are difficult to find. All our human tissue samples are procured through IRB approved clinical protocols and procedures.

In addition to the standard processing protocols Bay Biosciences can also provide human plasmaserum, PBMC bio-fluid samples using custom processing protocols, you can buy donor specific sample collections in higher volumes and specified sample aliquots from us.

Bay Biosciences also provides human samples from normal healthy donors, volunteers, for controls and clinical research, contact us Now.
