Bay Biosciences provides high quality, clinical grade, biopsy tissue samples, FFPE tissue blocks with matched cryogenically preserved sera (serum), plasma, peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) biofluid samples from patients diagnosed with Psoriasis.
The sera (serum), plasma and PBMC biofluid specimens are processed from psoriasis patient’s peripheral whole-blood using customized collection and processing protocols.
Biopsy tissue and matched biofluid samples are collected from unique patients diagnosed with psoriasis and are provided to a valued pharmaceutical customer for research, diagnostics, discovery and drug development.
Detailed clinical data, patient’s history, symptoms, complete blood count (CBC), serology, MRI, biopsy tissue findings, histopathology information, elevated biomarker levels, genetic and metabolic information associated with psoriasis specimens is provided to a valued customer for research, development and drug discovery.
The psoriasis sera (serum), plasma and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) biofluids are processed from patients peripheral whole-blood using customized collection and processing protocols.
Psoriasis Overview
Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that causes skin cells to multiply up to 10 times faster than normal. It causes inflammation in the body and makes the skin build up into bumpy red patches covered with white scales. Sometimes, these patches will crack and bleed. There may be visible signs of the inflammation such as raised plaques (plaques may look different for different skin types) and scales on the skin.
Psoriasis usually appears in early adulthood, for most patients, it affects just a few areas. In some severe cases, psoriasis can cover large parts of the patients body. The patches can heal and then come back throughout a patient’s life. They can grow anywhere, but most appear on the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back.
Types of Psoriasis
Following are the main type of psoriasis:
Pustular Psoriasis
Pustular psoriasis causes red and scaly skin with tiny pustules on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. This type of psoriasis is more common in adults. It causes white, pus-filled blisters and broad areas of red, inflamed skin. Pustular psoriasis is typically localized to smaller areas of the body, such as the hands or feet, but it can be widespread.
Plaque Psoriasis
Plauque psoriasis is the most common type of psoriasis. According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) about 80 percent of the psoriasis patients have plaque psoriasis. It causes red, inflamed patches that cover areas of the skin. These patches are often covered with whitish-silver scales or plaques. These plaques are commonly found on the elbows, knees, and scalp.
Guttate psoriasis
Guttate psoriasis which often starts in childhood or young adulthood, causes small, red spots, mainly on the arms, legs, torso and limbs. These spots are rarely thick or raised like plaque psoriasis. Triggers may be respiratory infections, strep throat, tonsillitis, stress, injury to the skin. Some antimalarial medicines and beta-blockers can also cause Gauttate psoriasis.
Inverse Psoriasis
In patients with inverse psoriasis bright areas of red, shiny, inflamed skin develops. These patches of inverse psoriasis develop under armpits or breasts, in the groin, or around skinfolds in the genitals.
Erythrodermic Psoriasis
Erythrodermic psoriasis is a severe and rare type of psoriasis. This form of psoriasis often covers large sections of the body at once. It causes fiery redness of the skin and shedding of scales in sheets. It is triggered by severe sunburn, infections, certain medications, and stopping some kinds of psoriasis treatment.
Signs and Symptoms of Psoriasis
Psoriasis symptoms differ from patient to patient and depend on the type of psoriasis. Affected areas of psoriasis disease can be as small as a few flakes on the scalp or elbow, or cover the majority of the body. Not every psoriasis patient will experience all of these symptoms. Some patients will experience entirely different symptoms if they have a less common type of psoriasis.
Following are the common symptoms of psoriasis include:
- Inflammed patches or rashes of red skin
- Soreness around patches
- Scaly plaques on the scalp
- Whitish-silver scales or plaques on the red patches
- Dry itchy, painful skin that can crack or bleed
- Small areas of bleeding where the involved skin is scratched
- Problems with fingernails and toenails, including discoloration and pitting; the nails may also begin to crumble or detach from the nail bed
- Itching and burning sensations around patches
- Painful swollen joints
Causes of Psoriasis
Exact causes of developing psoriasis are unknown. Scientists believe that it’s a combination of factors that can cause psoriasis. It is believed that something with the immune system causes inflammation triggering new skin cells to form too quickly. Normally, skin cells are replaced every 10 to 30 days. With psoriasis, new cells grow every 3 to 4 days. The buildup of old cells being replaced by new ones creates the whitish silver scales.
Following are the factors that can trigger an outbreak of psoriasis:
- Stress
- Cuts, scrapes, or surgery
- Strep infections
- Certain blood pressure medications (Beta Blockers)
- Antimalarial medications (Hydroxychloroquine)
Bay Biosciences is a global leader in providing researchers with high quality, clinical grade, fully characterized human tissue samples, bio-specimens and human bio-fluid collections.
We have samples available are cancer (tumor) tissue, cancer serum, cancer plasma cancer PBMC and human tissue samples from most other therapeutic areas and diseases.
Our company Bay Biosciences maintains and manages its own bio-repository, human tissue bank (biobank) consisting of thousands of diseased samples (specimens) and from normal healthy donors available in all formats and types.
Our biobank procures and stores fully consented, deidentified and institutional review boards (IRB) approved human tissue samples and matched controls.
All our human tissue collections, human specimens and human bio-fluids are provided with detailed samples associated patient’s clinical data.
This critical patient’s clinical data includes information relating to their past and current disease, treatment history, lifestyle choices, biomarkers and genetic information.
Patient’s data is extremely valuable for researchers and is used to help identify new effective treatments (drug discovery & development) in oncology, other therapeutic areas and diseases.
This clinical information is critical to demonstrate their impact, monitor the safety of medicines, testing & diagnostics, and generate new knowledge about the causes of disease and illness.
Bay Biosciences banks wide variety of human tissue samples and biological samples including cryogenically preserved at – 80°C.
Including fresh frozen tissue samples, tumor tissue samples, FFPE’s, tissue slides, with matching human bio-fluids, whole blood and blood derived products such as serum, plasma and PBMC’s.
