Swollen (Enlarged) Lymph Nodes Overview

Lymph nodes which are also called lymph glands, becomes swollen as a result of infection from bacteria or viruses. Swollen or enlarged lymph nodes (lymphadenopathy) is usually a sign that the body’s immune system is fighting an infection or disease. Rarely, swollen lymph nodes are caused by cancer

Lymph nodes are part of the body’s lymphatic system and play a vital role in the body’s ability to fight off Infections. The Lymphatic system is the body’s system of balancing the fluid levels. The lymphatic system consists of a network of tissues, vessels and organs that work together to move a colorless, watery fluid called lymph back into the body’s circulatory system or the bloodstream.

Lymph nodes function as filters, trapping viruses, bacteria and other causes of illnesses before they can infect other parts of the body.

Common areas where swollen lymph nodes may be noticed include the neck, under the chin, in the armpits and in the groin. There’s a network of about 600 lymph nodes in the body mostly located in the abdomen, arms, jaw and the legs.

Signs and Symptoms Swollen (Enlarged) Lymph Nodes

Causes of Swollen (Enlarged) Lymph Nodes

The lymph nodes get larger when more blood cells come to fight off an invading infection and illness. They all essentially pile in, causing pressure and swelling. Usually the lymph nodes swelling occurs close to the infection’s location.

Following are some of the common causes of swollen (enlarged) lymph nodes:

  • Ear infection’s
  • Infection’s (Respirator and sinus infection’s)
  • Infected (abscessed) tooth
  • Bacteria
  • Viruses
  • Cold and Flu
  • Mononucleosis
  • Measles
  • Skin wounds (cellulitis)
  • Strep throat
  • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus that causes AIDS

Other infection’s

  • Cat scratch fever (a bacterial infection from a cat scratch or bite)
  • Sexually transmitted infection’s (Syphilis)
  • Tuberculosis
  • Toxoplasmosis (a parasitic infection resulting from contact with the feces of an infected cat or eating undercooked meat)

Immune system disorders

  • Lupus (a chronic inflammatory disease that targets your joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, heart and lungs)
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis (a chronic inflammatory disease targeting the synovium which is a tissue that lines the joints.

Cancers

  • Lymphomas (cancer that originates in the lymphatic system.
  • Leukemia (cancer cancer of your body’s blood-forming tissue, including your bone marrow and lymphatic system).
  • Other cancer’s that have spread (metastasized) to lymph nodes.

Bay Biosciences is a global leader in providing researchers with high quality, clinical grade, fully characterized human tissue samples, bio-specimens and human bio-fluid collections.

Samples available are cancer (tumor) tissue, cancer serum, cancer plasma cancer PBMC and human tissue samples from most other therapeutic areas and diseases.

Bay Biosciences maintains and manages its own bio-repository, human tissue bank (biobank) consisting of thousands of diseased samples (specimens) and from normal healthy donors available in all formats and types.

Our biobank procures and stores fully consented, deidentified and institutional review boards (IRB) approved human tissue samples and matched controls.

All our human tissue collections, human specimens and human bio-fluids are provided with detailed samples associated patient’s clinical data.

This critical patient’s clinical data includes information relating to their past and current disease, treatment history, lifestyle choices, biomarkers and genetic information.

Patient’s data is extremely valuable for researchers and is used to help identify new effective treatments (drug discovery & development) in oncology, other therapeutic areas and diseases.

This clinical information is critical to demonstrate their impact, monitor the safety of medicines, testing & diagnostics, and generate new knowledge about the causes of disease and illness.

Bay Biosciences banks wide variety of human tissue samples and biological samples including cryogenically preserved at – 80°C.

Including fresh frozen tissue samplestumor tissue samples, FFPE’s, tissue slides, with matching human bio-fluids, whole blood and blood derived products such as serumplasma and PBMC’s.

Bay Biosciences is a global leader in collecting and providing human tissue samples according to the researchers specified requirements and customized, tailor-made collection protocols.

Please contact us anytime to discuss your special research projects and customized human tissue sample requirements.

Bay Biosciences provides human tissue samples (human specimens) from diseased and normal healthy donors which includes:

  • Peripheral whole-blood,
  • Amniotic fluid
  • Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BAL)
  • Sputum
  • Pleural effusion
  • Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
  • Serum (sera)
  • Plasma
  • Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC’s)
  • Saliva
  • Buffy coat
  • Urine
  • Stool samples
  • Aqueous humor
  • Vitreous humor
  • Kidney stones (renal calculi)
  • Other bodily fluids from most diseases including cancer.

We can also procure most human bio-specimens and can-do special collections and requests of human samples that are difficult to find. All our human tissue samples are procured through IRB approved clinical protocols and procedures.

In addition to the standard processing protocols Bay Biosciences can also provide human plasmaserum, PBMC bio-fluid samples using custom processing protocols, you can buy donor specific sample collections in higher volumes and specified sample aliquoting from us.

Bay Biosciences also provides human samples from normal healthy donors, volunteers, for controls and clinical research, contact us Now.
