Urological Diseases Overview

Urological diseases describe a wide variety of conditions, all related to the filtering and carrying of urine out of the body. Furthermore, these diseases can affect men, women, and children of all ages. Specifically, these diseases affect very specific parts of the body.

For instance, in female patients, urological diseases involve the urinary tract. In contrast, in male patients, urological diseases affect the urinary tract and the reproductive organs. Additionally, there are many urologic disorders and diseases. Following this, some of the common urological diseases include:

Urinary Tract Infections (UTI’s)

In fact, urinary tract infections (UTIs)are the result of pathogenic bacteria or viruses that invade the urinary tract and cause infection. Moreover, urinary tract infections (UTIs) are much more common in women patients than in men patients.

According to the AUAF website, roughly 60 percent of women and  12 percent of men will have at least one urinary tract infection (UTI) that causes noticeable symptoms during their lifetime. Specifically, a burning sensation during urination is one of the symptoms of a UTI. In addition, others include a frequent urge to urinate and the feeling that the bladder is not completely empty after urinating. Ultimately, antibiotics can usually clear up most urinary tract infections (UTIs) within five to seven days.

Urinary Incontinence

In addition, urinary incontinence is a loss of bladder control that results in the unwanted leakage of urine. Moreover, urinary incontinence is a common condition and can be inconvenient and embarrassing. According to the AUAF, about 33 million patients in the United States have overactive bladder (also known as OAB) representing symptoms of urgency, frequency and with or without urge of urinary incontinence.

There are a number of factors that can cause urinary incontinence. Following are some of the common factors that can cause urinary incontinence:

  • Urinary tract infections (UTI’s)
  • Overactive Bladder (OAB)
  • Constipation
  • Diabetes
  • Injury to the spinal cord
  • Weak sphincter muscles (muscles supporting the urethra)
  • Weak bladder
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Pregnancy or childbirth
  • Prostate disease (BPH)

Kidney Stones and Ureteral Stones

Kidney stones can develop in the kidneys when there are crystals in the urine and small particles surround and collect on these crystals. Ureteral stones that move from the kidney into the ureter which are the tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder. Kidney stones can block urine flow and cause a considerable amount of pain. Most patients are able to flush out small kidney stones from the body without intervention and medical help, but larger stones may result in blockage, which can create several complications and infection .

To remove large kidney stones medical or surgical procedures may be required in some cases. Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is one of the most commonly used techniques. The procedure involves using sound waves to break the kidney stones into smaller pieces so that they can be expelled from the body in urine.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is an enlarged prostate. It is an increase in the size of the prostate gland. BPH is more common in older men. It is not directly connected to prostate cancer . The symptoms of BPH are caused by the pressure that a larger prostate can place on the urethra. The urethra is the narrow tube that carries urine from the bladder and out of the body. Men with BPH may experience a frequent urge to urinate. They may also have a weak stream of urine when they do go and a feeling that the bladder is not empty after urination. Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) can be treated with alpha-blockers, in severe cases it is treated with surgical procedure.

Varicocele

Varicocele is an enlargement or abnormally dilated veins known as the “pampiniform plexus” of veins, in the scrotum which is the loose bag of skin that holds the testicles. A varicocele is similar to a varicose veins that affects the legs. Varicoceles are a common cause of low sperm production and decreased sperm quality, which can cause infertility. However, not all varicoceles affect sperm production. Varicoceles can also cause testicles to fail to develop normally or shrink.

Veins throughout the body carry blood from various organs back to the heart. Normally, they have valves that ensure the blood moves in the proper direction. However, when valves in the testicular vein don’t work properly, gravity can make blood collect in the scrotum, causing a varicocele. They usually occur on the left side, likely related to the course of the testicular vein in the abdomen.

Varicoceles can cause several problems, including impaired fertility, decreased testosterone production by the testis, or scrotal discomfort. For this reason, they are not usually treated unless there is reason for concern about one of these problems. In some cases, varicocele can cause azoospermia, or the complete lack of sperm release.

Other Common Urological Diseases

Following are some of the other common urological conditions:

  • Bladder cancer
  • Bladder prolapse
  • Erectile dysfunction (ED)
  • Hematuria (blood in the urine)
  • Interstitial cystitis (also called painful bladder syndrome)
  • Overactive bladder (OAB)
  • Prostatitis (swelling of the prostate gland)
  • Prostate cancer

Biospecimens

biospecimens

Bay Biosciences is a global leader in providing researchers with high quality, clinical grade, fully characterized human tissue samples, bio-specimens, and human bio-fluid collections.

Moreover, human biospecimens are available including tumor tissue, serum, plasma and PBMC samples from most other therapeutic areas.

Furthermore, Bay Biosciences maintains and manages its own biorepository, the human tissue bank (biobank) consisting of thousands of diseased samples (specimens) and likewise normal healthy donors for controls. Additionally, available in all formats and types.

In fact, our biobank procures and stores fully consented, de-identified and institutional review boards (IRB) approved human tissue samples, human biofluids such as serum samples, plasma samples from various diseases and matched controls.

Also, all our human tissue collections, human biospecimens and human biofluids are provided with detailed, samples associated patient’s clinical data.

In fact, this critical patient’s clinical data includes information relating to their past and current disease, treatment history, lifestyle choices, biomarkers, and genetic information.

Additionally, researchers find the patient’s data associated with the human biospecimens extremely valuable and use it to help identify new effective treatments (drug discovery & development) in oncology, as well as in other therapeutic areas and diseases.

Bay Biosciences banks wide variety of human tissue samples and human biological samples, including fresh frozen human biospecimens cryogenically preserved at – 80°C.

For example fresh frozen tissue samplestumor tissue samples, formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE), tissue slides, with matching human bio-fluids, whole blood and blood-derived products such as human serumhuman plasma and human PBMCs.

Bay Biosciences is a global leader in collecting and providing human tissue samples according to the specified requirements and customized, tailor-made collection protocols.
