Anaphylaxis Samples for Research
Bay Biosciences provides high quality, clinical grade, fresh frozen sera (serum), plasma and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) biofluid samples from patients diagnosed with Anaphylaxis.
The sera (serum), plasma and PBMC biofluid specimens are processed from anaphylaxis patient’s peripheral whole-blood using customized collection and processing protocols. The anaphylaxis matched biofluid samples are collected from unique patients diagnosed with anaphylaxis and are provided to a valued pharmaceutical customer for research, diagnostics, discovery and drug development.
Detailed clinical data, patient’s history, symptoms, complete blood count (CBC), serology, MRI findings, histopathology information, elevated biomarker levels, genetic and metabolic information associated with anaphylaxis specimens is provided to a valued customer for research, development and drug discovery.
The anaphylaxis cancer sera (serum), plasma and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) biofluids are processed from patients peripheral whole-blood using customized collection and processing protocols.
Anaphylaxis Overview
Anaphylaxis is a severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. It can occur within seconds or minutes of exposure to something you’re allergic to, such as peanuts or bee stings.
Anaphylaxis causes the immune system to release a flood of chemicals that can cause a person to go into shock, the your blood pressure drops suddenly and your airways narrow, blocking breathing. Signs and symptoms include a rapid, weak pulse; a skin rash; and nausea and vomiting. Common triggers include certain foods such as peanuts or tree nuts, some medications, insect venom and latex. Anaphylaxis causes a series of symptoms, including a rash, low pulse, and shock, which is known as anaphylactic shock. Anaphylaxis requires an injection of epinephrine and a follow-up trip to an emergency room. If epinephrine is not available, patient needs to be taken to a hospital emergency immediately. If anaphylaxis is not treated right away, it can be fatal.
Signs and symptoms of Anaphylaxis
Symptoms usually occur immediately after you come into contact with the allergen. However, sometimes it can occur a half-hour or longer after exposure. Following are some of the common signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis:
- Abdominal pain
- Anxiety
- Cough
- Confusion
- Facial swelling
- Itchy skin
- Rashes
- slurred speech
- Shortness of breath
- Low pulse
- Nausea
- Shock
- wheezing
- Difficulty swallowing
- Swelling in mouth and throat
Causes of Anaphylaxis
Anaphylaxis is the result of the immune system, the body’s natural defense system, overreacting to a trigger. The immune system produces antibodies that defend against foreign substances. This is good thing when a foreign substance is harmful, such as certain bacteria or viruses. In most cases, the body doesn’t react to the antibodies being released. But some people’s immune systems overreact to substances that don’t normally cause an allergic reaction.
Allergy symptoms are not usually life-threatening, but a severe allergic reaction can lead to anaphylaxis. Even if you or your child has had only a mild anaphylactic reaction in the past, there’s a risk of more severe anaphylaxis after another exposure to the allergy-causing substance.
The most common anaphylaxis triggers in children are food allergies, such as to peanuts, and tree nuts, fish, shellfish and milk. Besides allergy to peanuts, nuts, fish and shellfish, anaphylaxis triggers in adults include:
- Certain medications, including antibiotics, aspirin and other over-the-counter pain relievers, and the intravenous (IV) contrast used in some imaging tests
- Stings from bees, yellow jackets, wasps, hornets and fire ants
- Latex
Although not too common, some people develop anaphylaxis from aerobic exercise, such as jogging, or even less intense physical activity, such as walking. Eating certain foods before exercise or exercising when the weather is hot, cold or humid also has been linked to anaphylaxis in some people. In some cases, the cause of anaphylaxis is never identified (idiopathic anaphylaxis).
Risk Factors of Anaphylaxis
Following are some of the factors that increase the risk for anaphylaxis:
- Previous anaphylaxis: If someone have had anaphylaxis once, the risk of having this serious allergic reaction increases. Future allergic reactions might be more severe than the first reaction.
- Allergies or asthma: Patients who have either asthma or form of allergies are at increased risk of having anaphylaxis.
- Some other conditions: These include heart disease and an abnormal accumulation of a certain type of white blood cell (mastocytosis).
Biospecimens
Bay Biosciences is a global leader in providing researchers with high quality, clinical grade, fully characterized human tissue samples, bio-specimens, and human bio-fluid collections.
Moreover, human biospecimens are available including tumor tissue, serum, plasma and PBMC samples from most other therapeutic areas.
Furthermore, Bay Biosciences maintains and manages its own biorepository, the human tissue bank (biobank) consisting of thousands of diseased samples (specimens) and likewise normal healthy donors for controls. Additionally, available in all formats and types.
In fact, our biobank procures and stores fully consented, de-identified and institutional review boards (IRB) approved human tissue samples, human biofluids such as serum samples, plasma samples from various diseases and matched controls.
Also, all our human tissue collections, human biospecimens and human biofluids are provided with detailed, samples associated patient’s clinical data.
In fact, this critical patient’s clinical data includes information relating to their past and current disease, treatment history, lifestyle choices, biomarkers, and genetic information.
Additionally, researchers find the patient’s data associated with the human biospecimens extremely valuable and use it to help identify new effective treatments (drug discovery & development) in oncology, as well as in other therapeutic areas and diseases.
Bay Biosciences banks wide variety of human tissue samples and human biological samples, including fresh frozen human biospecimens cryogenically preserved at – 80°C.
For example fresh frozen tissue samples, tumor tissue samples, formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE), tissue slides, with matching human bio-fluids, whole blood and blood-derived products such as human serum, human plasma and human PBMCs.
Bay Biosciences is a global leader in collecting and providing human tissue samples according to the specified requirements and customized, tailor-made collection protocols.
