Unintended Weight Loss Overview
Unintended weight loss is a significant drop in a persons body weight that occurs even if the person is not trying to lose weight intentionally. Unintended weight loss occurs when people lose weight without changing their diet or exercise routine. Unexplained weight loss can be a symptom of a serious disease, including cancer or diabetes.
Weight loss of 10 pounds or more, or five percent of body weight, over a period of 6 to 12 months is considered “unexplained.”
Unintended weight loss can occur in anyone. However, it is most common (and most serious) in people who are over the age of 65. Even unexplained weight loss of less than 5 percent of body weight or 10 pounds may be the sign of a serious condition in older people.
Causes of Unintended Weight Loss
People can have unexplained weight loss for many causes, both medical and nonmedical. Often, a combination of factors results in a general decline in the overall health and a related weight loss. Sometimes a specific cause cannot be identified.
Following are some of the conditions which may cause unintended weight loss:
- Anxiety
- Amyloidosis (buildup of abnormal proteins in your organs)
- Cancer
- Certain Medications
- Changes in diet or appetite
- Congestive heart failure
- Crohn’s disease
- COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
- Diarrhea
- Dementia
- Diabetes
- Depression
- HIV AIDS
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
- Medications
- Parkison’s Disease
- Tuberculosis
- Ulcerative Colitis
Other Possible Causes of Unintended Weight Loss
A person may also experience unintended weight loss as a result of:
- Celiac Disease
- Kidney or liver disease
- Alcohol or drug use disorder
- Stomach ulcer stomach ulcer
Unintended Weight Loss in Women Verses Men
Anyone can experience unintended weight loss, regardless of their sex. However, whether a person is male or female can increase their risk for certain diseases and conditions that can cause unintended weight loss.
According to a 2018 study, adult women who are between the ages of 25–29 years or older than 35 years have a significantly higher risk than men of Crohn’s disease. After 45 years of age, men have a substantially higher risk of ulcerative colitis than women.
According to CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) depression affected almost twice as many women as men between 2013 and 2016.
According to the the American Cancer Society state that men have a higher risk of developing stomach cancer. Men are also at higher risk than women for developing pancreatic cancer.
Unintended Weight Loss Summary
Unexplained weight loss has many potential underlying causes, which range from inflammatory conditions to psychological disorders.
People can help their doctor identify the exact cause by recording any additional symptoms that they are having.
Bay Biosciences is a global leader in providing researchers with high quality, clinical grade, fully characterized human tissue samples, bio-specimens and human bio-fluid collections.
Samples available are cancer (tumor) tissue, cancer serum, cancer plasma cancer PBMC and human tissue samples from most other therapeutic areas and diseases.
Bay Biosciences maintains and manages its own bio-repository, human tissue bank (biobank) consisting of thousands of diseased samples (specimens) and from normal healthy donors available in all formats and types.
Our biobank procures and stores fully consented, deidentified and institutional review boards (IRB) approved human tissue samples and matched controls.
All our human tissue collections, human specimens and human bio-fluids are provided with detailed samples associated patient’s clinical data.
This critical patient’s clinical data includes information relating to their past and current disease, treatment history, lifestyle choices, biomarkers and genetic information.
Patient’s data is extremely valuable for researchers and is used to help identify new effective treatments (drug discovery & development) in oncology, other therapeutic areas and diseases.
This clinical information is critical to demonstrate their impact, monitor the safety of medicines, testing & diagnostics, and generate new knowledge about the causes of disease and illness.
Bay Biosciences banks wide variety of human tissue samples and biological samples including cryogenically preserved at – 80°C.
Including fresh frozen tissue samples, tumor tissue samples, FFPE’s, tissue slides, with matching human bio-fluids, whole blood and blood derived products such as serum, plasma and PBMC’s.
Bay Biosciences is a global leader in collecting and providing human tissue samples according to the researchers specified requirements and customized, tailor-made collection protocols.
Please contact us anytime to discuss your special research projects and customized human tissue sample requirements.
Bay Biosciences provides human tissue samples (human specimens) from diseased and normal healthy donors which includes:
- Peripheral whole-blood,
- Amniotic fluid
- Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BAL)
- Sputum
- Pleural effusion
- Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
- Serum (sera)
- Plasma
- Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC’s)
- Saliva
- Buffy coat
- Urine
- Stool samples
- Aqueous humor
- Vitreous humor
- Kidney stones (renal calculi)
- Other bodily fluids from most diseases including cancer.
We can also procure most human bio-specimens and can-do special collections and requests of human samples that are difficult to find. All our human tissue samples are procured through IRB approved clinical protocols and procedures.
In addition to the standard processing protocols Bay Biosciences can also provide human plasma, serum, PBMC bio-fluid samples using custom processing protocols, you can buy donor specific sample collections in higher volumes and specified sample aliquoting from us.
