Plasma and Serum from Crohn’s Disease Patients
Bay Biosciences provides high quality, clinical grade serum (sera), plasma and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) biofluid samples from treatment-naive patients diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease.
In addition, detailed annotations associated with the samples is provided to a valued pharmaceutical customer for research, development and drug discovery.
Crohn’s Disease Overview
A type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is Crohn’s disease, which causes inflammation of the digestive tract that can lead to abdominal pain, severe diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, and malnutrition.
Additionally, different areas of the digestive tract can be involved by the inflammation caused by Crohn’s disease in different people. Often, this inflammation spreads into the deeper layers of the bowel.
However, how Crohn’s disease begins, who is most likely to develop it, or how to best manage it is not yet known to researchers. Despite major treatment advances in the last several decades, a cure is not yet available.
Crohn’s disease Affects Both Males and Females
Furthermore, an estimated 3 million Americans are affected by IBD. Notably, both men and women are equally likely to experience Crohn’s disease. Crohn’s disease is known to be both painful and debilitating, and it can sometimes lead to life-threatening complications.
Although there is no known cure for Crohn’s disease, therapies are capable of greatly reducing its signs and symptoms and may even lead to long-term remission and healing of inflammation. Ultimately, with treatment, many patients with Crohn’s disease are able to function well.
Causes of Crohn’s Disease
Exact causes of Crohn’s disease are unknown, however, the following factors may influence developing Crohn’s disease:
- Immune system
- Genes
- Environment
According to Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation 28% percent of patients with Crohn’s disease have a first-degree relative, such as a parent, child, or sibling, who also has the disease. Certain factors can affect the severity of Crohn’s disease symptoms, these include:
- Smoking
- Age
- Whether or not the rectum is involved
- Length of time you’ve had the disease
Patients with Crohn’s are also more likely to develop intestinal infections from bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi. This can affect the severity of symptoms and create complications. Crohn’s disease and its treatments can also affect the immune system, making these types of infections worse. Yeast infections are common in Crohn’s and can affect both the lungs and the intestinal tract. It’s important that these infections are diagnosed and properly treated with antifungal medications to prevent further complications.
In Crohn’s disease, any part of the small or large intestine can be involved, and it may be continuous or may involve multiple segments. In some patients, the disease is confined to the colon, which is part of the large intestine. Signs and symptoms of Crohn’s disease can range from mild to severe. They usually develop gradually, but sometimes will come on suddenly, without warning. Crohn’s disease patients may also have periods of time when they have no signs or symptoms (remission).
Signs and Symptoms of Crohn’s Disease
The signs and symptoms of active Crohn’s disease:
- First and foremost, diarrhea
- Additionally, fever is another common symptom
- Furthermore, fatigue is often experienced by patients
- Moreover, abdominal pain and cramping can occur
- Loss of appetite
- Consequently weight Loss
- In some cases, blood in stools may be observed.
- Furthermore, mouth sores can develop
- Alongside this, a reduced appetite and weight loss may persist
- In addition, pain or drainage near or around the anus due to inflammation from a tunnel into the skin (fistula) may be present
- Similarly, patients may feel as if their bowels aren’t empty after a bowel movement (Tenesmus)
- Lastly, frequent need for bowel movements (Fecal incontinence)
Additional Symptoms
The symptoms may become more severe as the Crohn’s disease progresses, more serious symptoms may include:
- Perianal fistula which causes pain and drainage near your anus
- Ulcers that may occur anywhere from the mouth to the anus
- Inflammation of the joints and skin
- Shortness of breath or decreased ability to exercise due to anemia
Other signs and symptoms
Patients with severe Crohn’s disease may also experience:
- Inflammation of eyes
- Moreover, inflammation of the liver or bile ducts
- Kidney stones
- Iron deficiency (anemia)
- Delayed growth or sexual development, in children
Early detection and diagnosis of Crohn’s disease can help avoid severe complications and allow patients to begin treatment early.
Biospecimens
Bay Biosciences is a global leader in providing researchers with high quality, clinical grade, fully characterized human tissue samples, bio-specimens, and human bio-fluid collections.
Human biospecimens are available including cancer (tumor) tissue, cancer serum, cancer plasma, cancer peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). and human tissue samples from most other therapeutic areas and diseases.
Bay Biosciences maintains and manages its own biorepository, the human tissue bank (biobank) consisting of thousands of diseased samples (specimens) and from normal healthy donors for controls, available in all formats and types.
In fact, our biobank procures and stores fully consented, de-identified and institutional review boards (IRB) approved human tissue samples, human biofluids such as serum samples, plasma samples from various diseases and matched controls.
Also, all our human tissue collections, human biospecimens and human biofluids are provided with detailed, samples associated patient’s clinical data.
In fact, this critical patient’s clinical data includes information relating to their past and current disease, treatment history, lifestyle choices, biomarkers, and genetic information.
Additionally, researchers find the patient’s data associated with the human biospecimens extremely valuable and use it to help identify new effective treatments (drug discovery & development) in oncology, as well as in other therapeutic areas and diseases.
Bay Biosciences banks wide variety of human tissue samples and human biological samples, including fresh frozen human biospecimens cryogenically preserved at – 80°C.
For example fresh frozen tissue samples, tumor tissue samples, formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE), tissue slides, with matching human bio-fluids, whole blood and blood-derived products such as human serum, human plasma and human PBMCs.
Bay Biosciences is a global leader in collecting and providing human tissue samples according to the specified requirements and customized, tailor-made collection protocols.
Please contact us anytime to discuss your special research projects and customized human tissue sample requirements.
